What is a keyword?

Keywords in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) are the words and phrases that enable people to find or reach your website through search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. You may be able to attract more of your target market to your website by carefully choosing your keywords.

Why is keyword research important?

You increase the chance to rank highly in search engines (Google, Bing, etc.) for a specific topic by researching and choosing the most suitable target keywords. High search engine rankings increase website traffic, allowing you to market your goods and services online.

What keywords should I use?

Shine Ranker's keyword research tool shows you the monthly average searches from Google, keyword difficulty, and average CPC (Cost per Click).

To choose a keyword, you need to look at those factors. What we recommend:

  • Get the keyword most relevant to the content, product, or service that you're working on.
  • Choose the ones that have easy difficulty and/or intitle results (these are highlighted in green)
    • Keyword Difficulty:
      • Green - Easy difficulty
      • Yellow - Medium Difficulty
      • Red - Hard Difficulty
  • Use the keyword that has high monthly average searches
  • You would also like to have a low CPC count in a marketing standpoint

How to search for keywords?

After selecting a project you created, go to the Keywords Research dashboard located in the vertical menu on the left side of the page. By default, the dashboard will only show icons and table headers until you do a search.

What data are shown in the Keywords Research dashboard?

You'll see five columns in the Keywords Research dashboard - Keyword, Monthly Searches, Difficulty, Average CPC, and Actions. See the explanation of each below.

Keyword

This will list all the relevant keyword ideas based on the keyword or keyword variants you used to search. By default, the page shows 50 entries, but you can adjust how many it shows per page.

Monthly Searches

Monthly searches column is a Google Ads metric that displays the number of searches for a given query over the course of the previous month.

Difficulty

This column shows the difficulty of the keywords. On a logarithmic scale of 0 to 100, it represents the likelihood of appearing in the top 10 organic results for a keyword. In the event that no keyword difficulty is detected by our API, by default, it searches for the keyword's intitle result. This column is greatly influenced by location.

If the result is highlighted in green, it means that the keyword has an easy difficulty which has a better chance of ranking higher on search result pages. Yellow, is in the mid range while red is more difficult to rank due to high competition.

Average CPC (Cost Per Click)

This information is far more accurate than the typical search volume data, which displays the phrase match estimation for a collection of related keywords, and is quite helpful in determining the actual demand for a particular keyword. The results for the average CPC is with a forecasting date for the next month.

A high CPC indicates that you are spending a lot for each click on your advertisement. This may be a sign that your target audience is not responding to your ads or you need to adjust your targeting approach. In contrast, a low CPC indicates that you are receiving a high volume of clicks for your investment.

What are these buttons? I can't figure this out.

While our team of developers are still on the process of improving the overall design of Shine Ranker to make it more user friendly, let me explain what each of these buttons mean. Most of these buttons and options are also present on other dashboards.

Show number of entries

By default, each dashboard displays 50 search results per page. You can adjust it by clicking on the number '50' at the top left of the page, right below the words Keywords Research. You have several options on how many entries to show (50, 100, 500, 1,000, or All).

Language button

Before doing a keywords research, doublecheck the language if this is applicable to your search. By default, language is set to English. To change the language, click on the globe icon and a pop-up will appear for you to select a language. This button shows up on other dashboards as well.

Location button

Another button you may want to check before doing a search is the Location button. By default, the location is set to United States. So if you are using the keywords for a different location, you may want to change it. Click on the icon that looks like a target/crosshair then a pop-up to change the location will show then select the country.

Right now, the location can only be changed by country.

Enter keyword topics button

The Enter Keyword Topics button allows you to add three variations of the keyword you're trying to research. This looks like a play button.

Clicking it will show a pop-up where you can add up to three keywords. You don't need to have all three fields filled out.

Having a keyword variant is optional. Having it will allow the system to get more keyword ideas to show in the result. After you're done entering a search term, click on the Submit button to begin the search.

If you want to stop a search, there is a square button that will appear beside 'INPUT Search Records' located at the upper right of the page. This will disappear once the search is complete.

Just a reminder, you don't need to add a whole sentence or paragraph here. Just two to three words per line will do to best describe the term you want to search for.

Once the search is complete, the results will show up at the lower part of the screen right below the column headers. This is how it would look like with a successful search.

Look at the top portion beside the word 'Keywords Research'. This will show the keywords you searched for and how many keywords were found.

Update difficulty buttons

You'll notice that two new buttons will appear right beside the location button. These buttons are used to update the difficulty of the keywords.

Update selected difficulty button

This button will update selected keywords only. Select the keywords by clicking on the radio button at the left of the keyword. Then click on the update difficulty button to update the keyword difficulty of the selected keywords. You'll notice the change, if available, under the Difficulty column.

Update all difficulty button

The update all difficulty button will update all the keywords in the results page. For example, if your search gathered 312 keywords, all 312 keywords would be updated at the same time. This may take longer to complete depending on the number of search results.

Track keywords buttons

There are two buttons within this category. The tracking of selected keywords and tracking of all easy keywords within the search result.

Track selected keywords button

This button will only track selected keywords and the selected keywords will be stored in the tracked keywords dashboard. You can select one or multiple keywords, regardless of the difficulty.

Track all easy keywords button

Clicking this button will allow you to track all easy keywords at once. Easy keywords, meaning those difficulty in green. This will make it easier for you to choose the keywords you would want to use or keep.

Actions Column

The actions column contains 3 buttons that you can use per row (specific keyword). Here you can add an individual keyword to the dashboard, assign a keyword to a writer (will also be added to the dashboard), and remove the keyword from the dashboard.

Add keyword to dashboard button

This button looks like a checkmark with a plus sign. It allows you to add a specific keyword to the project's tracked keywords.

Assign writer button

Using this button will assign the selected keyword to a specific writer's dashboard. This will also add the keyword in the tracked keywords dashboard.

Remove keyword from dashboard

The icon used for this button is a trash can. This button will remove the keyword from the tracked keywords dashboard. This will not delete the keyword from the keywords research results.

You'll be able to identify that the keyword is already tracked when the row is highlighted in yellow. These are the only ones you can use this button for.
