A web page title is the text that appears in the browser tab and in search engine results as the clickable link to a webpage. It's usually a short, concise description of the content of the page and is important for several reasons:
- It helps visitors quickly understand what the page is about and whether it's relevant to their needs.
- It can improve the click-through rate from search engine results to your website, as a clear and compelling title can attract more clicks.
- It plays a role in search engine optimization (SEO) as search engines use the title to understand the topic and relevance of the page, and to display it in search results.
- It helps to differentiate your website from competitors and can reinforce your brand identity.
Issue: Title is blank
A clear and compelling web page title is important for both user experience and search engine visibility, and can help drive traffic and engagement to your website.
Suggested fix:
Add a page title. You don't want every single page to have duplicate titles, you want them to be different and unique as possible. (Ex: focus on putting the services for the title on service pages then add a call to action)
Issue: Title Length is red
The ideal title length for a web page is between 50-60 characters, including spaces. This is because search engines typically display only the first 50-60 characters of a page title in search results, and longer titles may get truncated or cut off.
Suggested fix:
The Title Length column checks if the title length is over or under 60 characters.
It's important to prioritize clarity and relevance over strict adherence to character limits. If a title needs to be longer to accurately describe the content of the page, it's better to use more characters than sacrifice clarity. Additionally, including the main keyword or topic of the page in the title can help with SEO, but it's important not to stuff the title with too many keywords or use misleading titles.
